Commission Pricing and Information

I am available for a limited number of commission pieces. If you would like to commission an original watercolor portrait, you may contact me by email ( or by phone (615)758-4652.
(Please note I will not be taking commissions during the months of November and December.)

When painting a commissioned piece, I mainly work from photographs. A good watercolor portrait begins with quality photographs. Portraits are painted from well-lit, well-thought out photos. A personalized photo shoot can be arranged. Contact me for details.

I realize that a personalized photo shoot may not always be possible, so for convenience sake, your photos are welcomed. A good photograph is very important to the success of your portrait. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when taking your photographs:

1. It's best to turn the camera flash off. A flash can flatten features and eliminate necessary shadows. Instead, use natural light and take photos near a bright window, on a covered porch or under a tree. An overcast day also works well. But, remember light is everything! Direct sunlight produces hard-edged shadows and can produce a dramatic effect in some cases. A softer but evident light that is easy on the eye will produce shadows that are soft-edged and gradual.

2. Take lots of photos. It's better to have too many good photos than not enough. Take close-up photos of the same pose, showing specific information such as hair and eye color, etc. Take a few of your photographs at eye level in order to capture details in the eyes and face.

3. Casual, candid photos make more interesting portraits than posed shots with big smiles. Big smiles make the eyes squint.  Be creative with the angle of your photo shots. Even a slight turn of the head can be more visually pleasing.

Photographs may be emailed to me via a ".jpeg" file from your personal digital camera or mailed to me. If you are mailing photos, please send only duplicates, not "one and only" originals. Although it is my policy to care for and return your photos with your portrait order, I will not be responsible for mailed photos.

I am limiting my commission pieces to head and shoulder portraits at this time.
